Authorities are looking for a local home-improvement contractor accused of ripping off homeowners who need roof repairs.

The Lancaster County Sheriff’s Office is seeking information on the whereabouts of 42-year-old Harvey Paul Laney, whose last known address is 2446 Doc Holiday Circle.

According to a Thursday, Jan. 30, release issued by the sheriff’s office, Laney has been charged with three counts of breach of trust over $2,000.

The release said an investigation revealed Laney markets himself as the owner of Carolina Roofing which is listed in the Yellow Pages in the local phone directory.

In the last month, Laney, in at least three separate incidents, has been contacted by prospective clients and asked to provide quotes to them to make home repairs or improvements.

After providing a quote and agreeing on the price, Laney was then paid a percentage of the cost upfront by the victim.

Laney then intentionally failed to return to do the work and has not been heard from by the victims, the release said.

The sheriff’s office has active warrants on Laney and other incidents are being investigated.

Anyone with information about his whereabouts should call the Lancaster County Sheriff’s Office at (803) 283-4136 or contact Crimestoppers at 1-888-Crime SC (1-888-274-6372). Anonymous tips can  be emailed or texted to www.midlandscrimestoppers.com.
