Lancers take 2 of 3 from Guilford Tech

The University of South Carolina Lancaster Lancers capped their regular-season baseball schedule with two Region X wins over Guilford Tech.

The Lancers were slated to play four games, but rain washed out the finale Sunday afternoon at the Lancaster High School baseball field.

USCL split the first two games in a home twin bill Saturday and posted the win Sunday when it downed GT, 5-0.

Casey Cooper worked seven innings for the win, allowing five hits and no walks. He fanned three Guilford batters.

Cooper aided his cause, tallying a run.

Randy Luckett led the Lancers’ offense with two hits, including a grand slam, and drove in four runs.

Jacob Murphy had two hits, including a single and a solo home run.

Julian Steen supplied a single and a double.

Stuart Pound had a hit and Byron Haag tallied a run.

The Lancers, in nine innings, edged Guilford Tech 7-6 in the nightcap of the doubleheader Saturday afternoon.

Byron Haag belted a three-run home run in the bottom of the seventh to boost the Lancers’ cause.

Randy Luckett rapped four hits, including a double, and drove in a run.

Colt Ellis, the former Buford High School star, had two hits, including a single and a home run and drove in three runs.

Kyle Towles had a double. Casey Cooper, Tyler Rodgers and Jordan Williams each had a hit for the Lancers.

Travis Shelley, who worked two-thirds of an inning, was the winner, posting two strikeouts and allowing a walk.

John McClure was the USCL starter, going four innings and yielding three runs, four hits and two walks. McClure fanned one.

Andrew Ansley went an inning and gave up two runs, two earned runs, three hits and a walk.

Ben Keane hurled an inning and Ritchie Robinson went 2.1 innings and allowed a run.

The Lancers dropped the first game of the opening twin bill Saturday, falling 7-5 in nine innings.

Stuart Pound went seven frames and allowed five runs, four earned, six hits and a walk. Pound whiffed nine.

Brandon Faulkenberry went 1.2 innings and gave up two runs, two hits and two walks. Travis Shelley went a third of an inning and walked two.

Byron Haag rapped a double and a single and drove in three runs. Kyle Towles had two hits.

Randy Luckett doubled and drove in a run.

Jared Huffman had a hit and drove home a run. Chaztin Venezia had a hit.

Casey Cooper tallied a run in the loss.

The Lancers, 32-16, 14-13 in region play, are idle until May 5 when they play in the region tournament at Burlington, N.C.

 “We were glad to get that final win to give us some momentum as we head to the region tournament,” said Lancers’ coach Steve Williams. “I’m proud of our team and posting over 30 wins this spring, with the bulk of those games against a tough region schedule.”
