Lancers split four in Region X tournament

The University of South Carolina Lancers split four games in the Region X baseball tournament in Burlington, N.C.

The tournament began last weekend and was completed earlier this week.

The Lancers, who finished a school record 34-18, dropped a 5-2 elimination game loss to Louisburg College on Tuesday.

Spartanburg Methodist, a team USCL swept during regular-season play, captured the region title.

The Pioneers are led by head coach Tim Wallace, a Lancaster native and former Lancaster High School baseball star.

Matt Williams, USCL coach Steve Williams’ son, is an assistant at SMC. He is also a former Lancaster High School player.

Wallace and Williams each played in the Lancaster Post 31 baseball program and with Lancaster Dixie Baseball.

Lancers’ standouts Byron Haag and Casey Cooper were each named to the All-Region X baseball team.

“We’re pleased with our season, which was a school record for wins in a season,” USCL coach Steve Williams. “We feel our baseball program is moving forward and we play in a tough, competitive region.”

Andrew Ansley, who worked 5.1 innings, took the loss to Louisburg, allowing four runs, two earned runs and nine hits. He fanned one.

Former North Central High School player Brandon Faulkenberry worked an inning, allowing an earned run, two hits and a walk.

Logan Segee, who starred at Buford High School, hurled two-thirds of an inning and allowed a run and a hit.

Travis Shelley pitched an inning and fanned one.

Stuart Pound had a triple, single and drove in a run.

Randy Luckett aided the Lancers’ offense with two hits.

Jared Huffman belted a solo home run and Casey Cooper drilled a double. Kyle Towles had a hit.

USCL stayed alive with a 9-5 win over Florence Darlington Tech.

Casey Cooper, 6-2, went the distance for the win, yielding five runs, eight hits, three walks and two earned runs. Cooper aided his cause with two hits and a RBI.

Jared Huffman sparked the offense with three hits, including a two-run home run, and two doubles. He drove in three runs.

Randy Luckett had a double, single and drove in two runs.

Stuart Pound had a single, triple and drove in a run. Kyle Towles supplied a single and a double.

Brantley Rumford doubled and drove in a run. Julian Steen drove in a run and Jacob Murphy tallied a run.

USCL stayed alive in the double-elimination field, topping USC Salkehatchie, 12-4.

Kyle Downs worked six innings and allowed four earned runs, five walks, five hits and struck out two.

Andrew Ansley went an inning and walked one.

Casey Cooper had a double and a triple and drove in two runs.

Byron Haag had a single, double and drove in a run. Kyle Towles and Jacob Murphy each had two hits and drove in a run.

Randy Luckett had a single and a double.

The Lancers opened play in the Region X tournament, falling to USC Sumter, 7-6.

Stuart Pound went seven innings and took the loss, allowing seven runs, seven hits and two walks. He fanned  eight.

John McClure and Ben Keane each went an inning in scoreless relief.
