The University of South Carolina Lancaster Lancers had a short stay in the NJCAA Eastern District baseball tournament on Friday, May 17.
The Lancers, who finished 21-30, dropped a pair of games in the double-elimination field.
No. 20 Armenian Sister’s Academy (ASA) Avengers of Brooklyn, N.Y., edged the Lancers, 4-3 in 11 innings.
ASA, the Region 15 champion, scored a run in the bottom of the 11th to take the one-run win.
The Avengers took an early 2-0 lead, but USCL answered with a three-run fifth inning to take a 3-2 lead. ASA scored a single run in the bottom of the sixth to tie the game and it stayed that way to the 11th when the Avengers scored a run off USCL’s Logan Segee.
Dylan Parker went 10 innings and allowed seven hits, three runs, two earned runs. He struck out 12 and walked none.
Jacob Murphy led USCL with two hits, including a home run and a double. Nick Sergakis supplied two hits, including a double.
Brantley Rumford had a hit as did Wade Arduini and all-region catcher Byron Haag.
Willie Nunez, one of four pitchers used by ASA, worked 2.2 innings and allowed a hit and fanned one for the win.
Junior Maldonado led the Avengers with three hits and drove in two runs. Gilberto Mendoza had two hits and drove in a run.
The Lancers, after falling to ASA, then faced Potomac State, W.Va., which had fell to Spartanburg Methodist in the district tournament opener, and the Catamounts eliminated the Lancers with an 8-0 win on Friday afternoon.
The Lancers earned a bid to the Eastern District tournament as the Region X tournament runner-up to SMC.
