Lancers drop twin bill at Newberry

The University of South Carolina at Lancaster Lancers dropped a pair of non-region losses to the Newberry College junior varsity on Wednesday, February 20.

The Newberry Junior Wolves took an 8-6 win over the Lancers in the opener and notched a 2-1 victory in game two.

In the opener, the Junior Wolves ignited for four runs in the bottom of the seven to take the two-run win. Logan Segee, who worked 3.2 innings, allowed three hits, four earned runs and two walks. He fanned four.

Chris Stewart worked three frames and yielded two hits, two walks, four hit batters, four runs, two earned runs.

Nick Sergakis led the Lancers’ offense with two hits, including a solo home run and a double. Chaztin Venezia had two hits and drove in two runs. Byron Haag had a hit. Wade Arduini and Julian Steen each added a RBI.

In the nightcap, Newberry edged the Lancers, 2-1.

Kyle Nyenhuis went two innings and allowed two hits. Former Buford High School hurler Ricky Lewis worked two frames and yielded three hits, two earned runs and a walk. He fanned two and walked one.

Blake Shirley pitched two innings and allowed a hit with two strikeouts.

Patrick Burt had a RBI-double for the Lancers’ lone run.

The Lancers are idle until Friday, March 1 when they play in the Pepsi Invitational at Francis Marion University where they face Cecil in a seven-inning game.

USCL faces Heartland at 2:30 and Potomac State at 5 p.m. on Saturday. 

 The Lancers cap tournament on Sunday, March 3 when they face FCTC.
