Lancaster native Erin Mountain, a master of arts in teaching candidate at Winthrop University, provided the illustrations for the new book, “South Carolina People and Places” (Carlisle Publishing, May 2011).
The book by Winthrop educational research professor Mark Dewalt explores the people, places and events vital to the state’s long history, in a format easily accessible to the state’s school children.
He decided to write the book after several teachers in Lake City, Kingstree and Manning approached him expressing a need for a book on South Carolina history – a subject introduced in third grade.
“My goal is to create books children can have that cover important content,” said Dewalt, who is chair of Winthrop’s Department of Counseling, Leadership and Educational Studies.
Dewalt, Mountain and two other Winthrop students – Elisabeth Wise  and Virginia Fagg – spent two years on the project.
There was a book signing for “South Carolina People and Places” on May 5 at The Bookworm in the DiGiorgio Campus Center at Winthrop University in Rock Hill, where the book is available.
