Lady Warriors rally for 59-50 win

INDIAN LAND – Indian Land’s playoff-bound Lady Warriors solidified their Class A Upper State postseason basketball bid with a 59-50 basketball win over North Central in their Conference III-A regular-season finale.The Lady Warriors’ win gave IL a split after the North Central boys took a 57-43 win over the Warriors in the nightcap.In the opener, the IL girls finished fast for the nine-point win over the Lady Knights.The contest was deadlocked at 20-all after one period and the IL girls held a 31-29 edge at the half.The Lady Knights rallied to tie the game at 38 with a period to play.The Lady Warriors, sparked by Shelby McConnell, outscored NC 21-12 in the final eight minutes for the win.McConnell, who led a balanced IL attack with 14 points, hit 10 points in the final quarter, including a 6-6 effort at the foul line.“We played well down the stretch and did a good job at the foul line,” IL coach Tamara Jacobus said. “This was a good win for us heading into the playoffs.”Indian Land hit seven of 10 clutch foul shots in the final two minutes to seal the victory.Mariah Williams and Hannah Harris hit 11 points each to boost the Lady Warriors. Jelisa Gordon scored 10 and Mykela Hallums netted nine points.Alyssa Thomas finished with four points.North Central was led by Samantha Threatt, who scored 23 points, 18 in the second half.Leah Beckham chipped in 15 points for the Lady Knights.Indian Land, the defending Class A Upper State champion, opens postseason play Tuesday.The IL girls finished as the Class A state runners-up last season.The Lady Warriors are the third seed out of Conference III-A and travel to Calhoun County to open the playoffs.The Chesterfield girls, who defeated McBee on Thursday night, took the second seed out of Conference III-A girls play.In the boys game, North Central used a late rally to take a 57-43 win over the Warriors.NC led 37-34 after three periods, and ignited in the final period with a 20-9 surge to secure the 14-point win over the Warriors.Greg Caldwell sparked North Central in the pivotal final period, hitting eight of his 10 points.Rante Drakeford and Logan Murphy each hit 17 to lead North Central’s scoring.Travis Anderson led IL with 10 points. Karl Watson followed with seven points. Marcus Williams and Tai Young each tallied six.Richard Rose, Jeffrey Williams and Justin Gordon added four each. Keyadd Miller had two points for IL.IL led 12-9 after one period, but NC rallied for a 26-24 lead at the break and stayed on top for the win.
