The Andrew Jackson Lady Vols, down two games in the standings a couple of weeks back, completed a championship comeback, taking a 7-0 win over Cheraw to post the Conference VIII-AA softball championship.
The Lady Vols’ 10th straight league crown gives it a home game in the Class AA Lower State playoffs which open Thursday.
AJ, 15-8, 6-2, rode the solid pitching of sophomore hurler Chelsea Vincent to the shutout win. Vincent allowed two hits and no walks. She aided her cause with two hits and a pair of RBIs.
“We were outstanding tonight,” said AJ coach Steve Middleton. “A couple of weeks ago, it looked bleak for these girls in terms of a league title this season, but they kept their focus and composure.”
Tristan Faile and Caroline Phillips each had a double and a single and drove in two runs. Tessa Faile had a hit, drove in a run and scored a run. Caryn Truesdale had a hit and tallied a run. Casey Hammond double and scored a run. Dayne Ware scored three runs.
AJ hosts Lancaster High on Lady Vols’ Senior Day on Saturday at 3 p.m. The Lady Vols visit South Florence on Monday.
LHS hosts Senior Day today in a 5:30 home clash with Nation Ford.
The Lancaster High Bruins’ baseball team stayed in the running for a Class AAAA Upper State playoff bid with a 15-3 road win over South Pointe on Tuesday night.
LHS senior hurler Nick Ferguson, 5-2, posted the win, allowing three runs, five hits, six walks and hit three batters. Ferguson fanned two.
Michael Catoe hurled two frames of scoreless relief to cap the win. Catoe was solid at the plate with three hits as LHS improved to 7-6 in region play.
Ross Maiden aided the LHS charge with two hits, a single and a double, and drove in four runs. Jimmie Jordan had two hits and three RBIs. Trevor Hammond had a single, double and drove in a run. Brion Strothers had two hits and drove in a run. Will Gaston and Bryan Gainer each added a hit in the Bruins’ 13-hit offensive.
LHS, 9-11-1, caps regular-season play with a visit to Nation Ford today at 6:30 p.m.
AJ booters top BHS
The Andrew Jackson soccer team improved to 13-0 with a tough win over rival Buford on Tuesday night at AJ.
The match ended in a 1-1 draw and was decided on penalty kicks. The Vols’ Tyler Stroud, Oliver Wall, William Bridges and Jason Faile converted to lift AJ to the win. AJ keeper Jonathan Faile made two of three stops on BHS penalty kicks to seal the win.
Lady Warriors blank LHS
The Indian Land Lady Warriors posted a milestone win Thursday night, defeating rival Lancaster High 3-0. IL’s win was the first over the Lady Bruins since the girls soccer program began at IL. The IL seniors led the win. Elizabeth Rowe tallied two goals in the first half, giving her 15 this season. Andrea Lavieri scored the last goal in the second half, assisted by Daysi Perez. The defense was led by Brooke Adams at sweeper. Kelsey Dusenbery, Amber Smith, and Karaline Berei completed the rest of the defense. Michelle Cato and Shannon Hammaker held up the midfield throughout the match. Brittani Kronquist had 14 saves to add to her fifth shutout this season. IL is now 6-5.
Lady Warriors win
Indian Land rolled to a 14-0 Conference III-A softball win over Great Falls to improve to 11-9, 7-1 in Conference III-A play.
Kimber Coley, 5-6, was the winner, tossing a one-hitter. Coley also had three hits, with a triple, and drove in a run for the winners.
Paige Brugh had three hits, including a home run, and drove in three runs. Katie Jowers had a double and a RBI.
IL is hosting Senior Day Saturday when it faces North Central at 2 p.m. The team is also hosting a youth clinic for the three IL area recreation softball teams at the Lady Warriors’ field from 10 a.m. to noon. The rec teams will also participate in pre-game ceremonies.
LHS golf team wins
The Lancaster High golf team upped its record to 6-12 with a 164-182 road win over Andrew Jackson at the Kershaw Golf Club on Wednesday.
Corey Moore led the Bruins with a 40. Will Riggins and Russ Faile each shot a 41. John Heath carded a 42.
Jacob Bailey led AJ with a 43.
Lancaster plays in the Trojan Invitational in Rock Hill today and Saturday.
Junior Bruins booters win
The Lancaster High School junior varsity boys soccer team, with a solid team effort, downed South Point 4-1 on Tuesday.
Bobby Dukes tallied twice to pace the Junior Bruins. Jaden Driggers and Chase Christensen provided assists to Dukes. Dukes also had an assist in the win. Marquis Perry scored and Driggers connected on a penalty kick.
Corey Rowell made some major saves at the net. Cody Shannon, Chad Kizer and Dillon Huggins led the LHS defense in the victory.
