The No. 5 Andrew Jackson Lady Volunteers rolled to help AJ earn a Region IV-AA hoops home split with Cheraw High on Tuesday, Feb. 4.
The 16-3 Lady Vols, 7-0 in region play, started fast to fuel a 69-34 victory over the Lady Braves.
In the nightcap, Cheraw used a late run to gain a 54-49 win over the Vols.
The opener was a laugher as AJ, up 16-5 after one period, built a 42-9 halftime lead on the way to the 35-point win.
The AJ girls, with four players in double digits, were led by Elizabeth Scott’s 17 points, 10 in the first half. Dareisha Sowell scored 14, eight in the first two periods.
Brantley Ussery hit 12, 10 in the opening half, and McKenzie Horton netted 11.
“Our defense has been outstanding and is giving us transition baskets,” AJ coach Dennis Farmer. “We continue to spread the ball around and get a lot of contributions.”
AJ led 51-17 after three quarters.
Summer Vick hit six and Anslee McDow had three. Jerrisha Crawford, Hailley Burton and Marketta McIlwain each netted two points.
Ladaisa Jackson led Cheraw with nine points.
In the boys game, the CHS Braves won in a game of runs.
AJ, down 22-21 at the half, trailed 42-33 with a period to play, but the Vols ignited on a 14-1 run to gain a 47-43 lead on CHS.
The Braves, in the final 2:45, answered with an 11-2 charge to gain the five-point victory.
“I’m proud of our effort and hustle,” AJ coach Danny Wright said. “We fought back, but came up short. We have to put this game behind us and be ready for Chesterfield.”
Dalvin Taylor led the Braves with 20 and Zach Sellers hit 14.
Corey Walters paced AJ with 17, 11 in the second half. Dustin Eddins scored 10.
Tray King had seven and Dontarius James hit six. Cameron McIsaac had four and Luke Sowell scored three. Austin Truesdale added two for the Vols.
Andrew Jackson will host its annual senior tonight when the Vols play host to the Chesterfield Rams.
