BUFORD – Lee Central made some late free throws count in notching a 46-42 win over Buford to open a varsity sweep of host Buford in Region IV-AA hoops play Tuesday night.

The Lady Stallions held a 41-37 lead with 2:40 to play and protected its narrow edge to the final buzzer.

With 11 seconds to go, Buford’s Brittany Faulkner, who scored three points, hit one of two foul shots to slice the LC edge to one, 43-42.

From that point, the Lady Stallions converted in the clutch at the line to seal their league win.

Quetta Brown hit a pair of free throws with seven seconds to play to extend the Lady Stallions’ lead to 45-42.

Then, with little time on the board, Shagera Atkinson hit one foul shot to seal the four-point win.

Buford, which dipped to 10-3, 1-2, held a 23-18 edge at the break, but Lee Central rallied with a pivotal 18-8 surge in the third quarter to gain a 36-31 lead.

“Lee Central warmed up in the second half,” Buford High School girls basketball coach T.J. Armbrust said. “I thought we played well enough to win, but we need to execute better.

“I was happy with our effort, but not with the loss,” he said.

Buford outscored LC in the final period, 11-10, but the Lady Stallions held on for the victory.

Carley Bailey paced the Lady Jackets with 18 points, 10 in the second half. Erica Blackmon hit eight points and grabbed seven rebounds for the BHS girls.

Bailey’s effort included eight rebounds and four assists.

Daphne Honeycutt scored five, while Megan Deese finished with four points. Faulkner netted three points. Mikayla Hannah and Hannah Knight each had two points. Knight added eight steals and four assists.

Ariel Boyle paced the Lady Stallions, 3-9, 2-1, with 12 and Atkinson tallied 10 points.

In the boys’ game, the Stallions used a fast start to gain the lead and stayed in control for the 70-48 win.

LC, on top 27-11 after one period, held a 41-26 lead at the half.

Shaquille Moses led the Stallions, 10-1, 3-0, with 15 points and Tykeem Thomas hit 14. Reginald Jackson added 11 for LC.

“Lee Central is a good team,” Buford High boys coach Neil Couch said. “I felt their experience made the difference tonight.

“We had some good minutes off the bench and I was pleased with the effort, but disappointed we lost,” he said. “If we improve like we did tonight, I feel we will be able to challenge in our region games.”

Senior center Marcus Brown paced the Jackets, 0-3 in league play, with 19 points, 13 in the second half. Kholby Pate scored 11.

Corey Bracey hit six and Evan Joplin tallied five. Evan Flynn and Silas Moore each scored three points. Orantez Coleman scored one.

Buford hosts Cheraw tonight with the girls’ game at 6 and the boys game at 7:30.

The Jackets travel to Indian Land on Tuesday to battle the rival Warriors.
