KMG America has found a way to have a little fun while helping others.

The local insurance company is collecting non-perishable foods to donate to HOPE of Lancaster Inc., a local agency that helps people with food, utilities and other expenses.

KMG has done the drive for several years, but this is the first time it's been set up as a competition. Employees have split up into four teams, who are competing to see who can raise the most pounds of food.

The winning team will receive some type of surprise. In the past, it's been in the form of a pizza party. And bragging rights come along with it too, says Elissa Blackwell, a clinical management supervisor at KMG.

The drive is fun and brings joy knowing that you're helping others, she said.

"I've always given but I've never helped like this," Blackwell said Wednesday morning, standing outside HOPE's office with other coworkers who had just delivered four truck loads of food.

"It has really been a blessing to me. It makes you feel real good."

This is the third week of KMG's drive. Every Wednesday, they load up all the food on trucks and take it to the HOPE office.

Before this week's load came in, KMG had raised about 14,000 pounds of food.

The drive wraps up next week.

"KMG has been wonderful in bring in the food," HOPE director Elaine Adkins said. "It's going to really help us get stacked for the winter months."

HOPE, which stands for Helping Other People Effectively, needs as many donations as possible and is always looking for more volunteers. The office is located at 2008 Pageland Highway.
