KERSHAW – A Kershaw man was airlifted to a Columbia hospital after an assault in there early Saturday.

According to a Lancaster County Sheriff’s Office incident report, deputies responded to East Third Street about 12:15 a.m. Saturday and spoke with the 49-year-old victim. The report said the man was bleeding heavily from the head and mouth.

The man told deputies that he was walking from his friend’s house on East Fourth Street. He said he passed by a Springs Street home where four men were standing outside.

The man, who appeared intoxicated, said he turned the corner and the group of men “jumped him.”

The victim said he knew one of the men in the group.

Emergency Medical Services took the man to the Camden hospital, where he was airlifted to Palmetto Health Richland Hospital in Columbia.

The report said deputies found a pool of blood at the corner of Springs and East Third Street, with several teeth scattered in the area. The officers also found a knife with blood on it, the report said.

Deputies spoke to the man who the victim said was part of the group that attacked him. The man said he had been in the yard with his girlfriend most of the night and didn’t know anything about the assault, the report said. Deputies looked at the man’s shoes and hands and did not notice blood on them, the report said.

The victim was listed in fair condition on Monday, a hospital spokeswoman said. Anyone with information about the incident may call the Lancaster County Sheriff’s Office at 283-3388.
