Kershaw County deputies have arrested a 24-year-old rural Kershaw man for sexually assaulting a 9-year-old girl in two incidents earlier this year.
Kershaw County Sheriff Jim Matthews said deputies arrested Grant Adam Helms Jr., no address provided, Thursday, May 8, on two counts of first degree criminal sexual conduct with a minor under age 11.
Matthews said the investigation began in early 2014 when his office received information Helms had sexually assaulted a girl at a home in rural Kershaw just inside the Kershaw County line.
During the investigation, detectives learned Helms actually assaulted the girl twice at the home in separate incidents within a 24-hour period, Matthews said.
He said investigators scheduled a forensic interview with the child soon after to “ascertain the specifics of the sexual assaults” and the forensic specialist who conducted the interview was able to verify the child’s account of the incidents.
Matthews said Helms confessed to the allegations during an interview with the case detective and was arrested at the Kershaw County Sheriff’s Office.
Matthews said such cases against young children are especially disturbing and occur all too frequently.
He said he suspects more sexual assaults against children take place than are reported.
“Unfortunately, the emotional scars left with these young victims will follow them the rest of their lives,” Matthews said. “I am glad we were able to take this man off the street.”
According to the release, Helms has no prior criminal record.
He is jailed at the Kershaw County Detention Center in Camden awaiting a bond hearing.
