The Katawba Valley Land Trust has hired its first employee.
Robert Austin Jenkins of Camden will become the nonprofit group's executive director in early September.
Chartered in 1992, the land trust has had as its main focus Lancaster and Chester counties. It seeks to protect land through conservation easements, acquisition of property and transfer of some properties to other public or private land management agencies.
To date, the group has undertaken 53 land transactions, protecting 6,862 acres in five South Carolina counties.
