The Buford boys basketball team wrapped up a tough week on the hardwood with a solid win.
The Jackets capped a sweep of visiting Ben Lippen School of Columbia with a 62-50 victory over the Falcons on Saturday, Jan. 18.
The BHS Lady Jackets notched their second straight win, topping the BL girls, 44-39.
The Jackets, coming off region losses to AJ and Central of Pageland, handed Ben Lippen only its second loss of the season in their 12-point victory.
The Buford victory came some 24 hours after BHS dropped a 66-65 home loss to Central which hit a three-pointer at the buzzer.
The Jackets came out strong and used a 10-0 start to open the game only to see BL rally to make it 16-12 after a period of play.
Buford then took control in the second quarter when the Jackets outscored the 13-2 Falcons to lead 31-18 at the half.
“Our guys played one of their more unselfish games of the season,” BHS boys coach Neil Couch said. “It was good to get a win coming off a tough loss on Friday night.
“We have to continue to play with this same level of intensity,” Couch said.
Buford, which held a 42-32 lead after three periods, built as much as a 16-point spread, 60-44, with 1:41 to play before taking the win.
Kholby Pate hit 25 points, 13 in the first half, to lead the Jackets. Pate hit five treys and was 6-6 at the foul line.
Christian Joplin, who had a solid start, hit 13 points, including nine in the first quarter and 11 in the first half. Joplin was 5-6 from the field for the game.
Corey Bracey and Garrett Crenshaw each tallied six points. Tomas Hayden supplied five and Orantez Coleman had four.
Druw Rollings added three points.
Buford, 7-7, 0-2, aided its chances, hitting 20 of 32 free throws in the game.
Brandon Cox scored 19 to lead Ben Lippen.
In the girls game, the Lady Jackets used a balanced attack to net their five-point win.
Buford, 7-5, 1-1, held a 38-30 lead with 3:40 to play, but the Lady Falcons rallied to make it 41-38 with 1:11 left.
From that point, the BHS girls hit their share of free throws to seal the win.
“Coming off a tough game with Central, our girls played at a high energy level,” BHS girls coach T.J. Armbrust said. “Our girls are starting to shoot better and with more confidence and we hope to see that continue.”
Buford, tied at 8-all after one period, trailed by one, 17-16 at the half.
The Lady Jackets rallied to take a 29-28 lead with a period to play and then outscored the Lady Falcons, 15-11 in the final period for the win.
Hanna Robinson led three BHS players in double figures with 12, nine in the second half.
Jasona Ballard and Autumn Rabon each scored 10 points.
Rabon netted eight in the second half and Ballard scored six following the break.
Tatyana Stewart and Ashley Roberts each had four points. Gabby Davis added three and Valerie Jones added one.
Laura Carter scored 11 to lead the Lady Falcons.
Buford returned to region play Tuesday, Jan. 21 when the Jackets hosted Cheraw.
BHS visits Chesterfield High School on Friday, Jan. 24.
