Buford kept pace in the Region IV-AA baseball race with an 11-8 road win over county rival Andrew Jackson on Friday.

Buford, 7-2, 5-1 in region play, held a 7-5 edge after five innings, and used a four-run sixth inning to build an 11-5 lead.

AJ battled to the final out, scoring three runs in its final two at-bats, but BHS held on for the region win.

Senior Logan Segee, in 4.1 innings was the winner, fanning two and allowing four hits, five runs – three earned. Segee also allowed six walks.

Senior Colt Ellis hurled 2.2 frames to notch the save. Ellis allowed three runs, four hits, a  walk and hit a batter. He struck out one.

Ellis was backed by some key defense in fifth when the Jackets turned a pitcher-to-home-to-first double play to thwart an AJ rally.

In the seventh, Buford also turned a clutch double play to boost its hopes.

“This was a tough win for us since it came on the road against a region rival,” BHS coach Eric Funderburk said. “Give AJ a lot of credit because their players battled to the final pitch.”

Ellis keyed the Jackets’ nine-hit attack with three hits, including two doubles. He scored twice and drove in two runs.

Jacob Jamison drilled three hits, drove in a run and scored a run. Segee supplied two hits, two RBIs and tallied a run. Jay Chambers had a bunt single, scored a run, walked twice, was hit by a pitch and had two stolen bases.

Kendrick Trapps scored twice and had three stolen bases. Ricky Lewis tallied two runs and drove in a run. Cody Gordon and Colin Plyler each had a RBI. Brett Estridge and Kholby Pate each scored a run.

The Vols, 6-7, 2-4, were led by Bobby Delly who singled, doubled, scored twice and drove in a pair of runs. Chandler Neal nailed a two-run homer and scored twice, while Tyler Rodgers had a solo shot.

Chandler Gardner had two singles and scored a run. Tripp Rollings had a hit and drove in two runs, while Sidney Watson had a single and tallied a run. Eric Broughton also scored a run.

Buford faces Central of Pageland on Tuesday, while AJ visits Indian Land in region play.

AJ’s reset date for the Lancaster game, rained out on March 26, is April 16 at the Vols’ field.

Cheraw tops IL

Cheraw took an early lead and stayed in control for a 6-1 Region IV-AA baseball win over Indian Land on Friday night.

Austin Hart hurled the win, while IL’s Chris Cantrell took the loss.

The CHS Braves, 8-1, 5-1, were led by Jonathan Stokes, who drilled two hits, including a home run. Zack Herrington also had two hits for the Braves.

Cantrell and Jimmy Locklear each had a hit for the Warriors, who fell to 1-6, 1-5.

Indian Land hosts the Grace Academy Lions of Matthews, N.C., on Monday night.

LHS baseball play

Lancaster High School has a busy week on the diamond. LHS hosted York on Saturday. The Bruins visit Clover on Tuesday and Fort Mill on Wednesday. Lancaster’s annual senior night is Friday against Northwestern at 7.

Lancaster’s make-up game with AJ, which was rained out March 26, is set for April 16 at the Vols’ field.

IL, Buford JVs win

The Indian Land Junior Warriors and Buford Junior Jackets notched opening night wins in the second annual Bruins Invitational junior varsity soccer tournament at Memorial Stadium on Friday.

The IL jayvees, 3-1, defeated host Lancaster, 4-0. Garrett Gerdes scored three goals, two in the second half, to lead the Junior Warriors, who held a 2-0 halftime edge on the Junior Bruins.

Jordan Szustwal added a goal. Justin Penn and Shea Rodgers each had two assists. IL keepers Charles Turner and Luke Harris teamed for the shutout at the net for coach Tim Thornton’s team.

Junior Bruins coach Robert Fields saluted the play of striker Brenton Baker, forward Austin Melvin, sweeper Trevor Latham, fullback Jonathan Monsolvo and wing Cory Lucas.

In the nightcap, Buford improved to 2-2-1 on the season with a 1-0 win over Andrew Jackson. After a scoreless first half, Buford’s Cole Keaton scored on a 30-yard shot to lift the Junior Jackets to the win.

Matt Griffin led the Junior Jackets’ defense with 10 saves for the match.

Play in the tournament continued Saturday at Memorial Stadium where four matches were played.
