The Buford High School wrestling team opened the Class AA Lower State postseason dual tournament in impressive fashion, taking a 59-0 win over Keenan High School of Columbia on Wednesday night at BHS.

The Jackets had the match won before it actually began since the Raiders had only five wrestlers.

In those matches, the Jackets, who improved to 12-8, outscored Keenan 23-0.

Taylor Banks and Lamont McPhearson won on pins, while Devin Starnes and Josh Roberts each had a decision. Josh Ferguson prevailed on a superior decision.

Three matches had double forfeits, with neither team earning points.

BHS was awarded 36 points on its six forfeit wins.

"Since we knew we had the match already won going in, I don't think our guys were as intense as they would normally be," Buford High wrestling coach John Mahaffey said. "With all the forfeits, I knew it would be a short match."

BHS is seeded seventh in the Class AA Lower State field, while Keenan was the 10th seed.

The win advances Buford to the Class AA Lower State second round on Saturday when BHS ventures to Cheraw to meet the second-seeded Braves.

CHS defeated Buford twice during the season.

"We have some areas to work on, but we can give Cheraw a tough match," Mahaffey said. "In the two matches we wrestled this season, we had some close matches which they won, so we have to wrestle a little harder this time."

The match was likely the Jackets final home match this season and Mahaffey saluted the team's lone senior, Ryan Baskin.

"Ryan was injured and didn't wrestle, but we appreciate his effort this season," Mahaffey said.

The Jackets wrestle at Cheraw on Saturday at 1 p.m. Cheraw is seeded No. 2 behind top-seeded Loris.

The tournament winner advances to the state tournament at Ridge View High School on Feb. 9 to meet the Class A Lower State champion.

The admission Saturday is $5 per person.

The 16-6 Warriors capped their season Tuesday when they defeated Class AAAA foe York 37-27 on IL Parents Night.

"The match was a tough one," IL coach Mike Kersey said. "We got behind early, but then made a good comeback. We didn't panic and kept our focus."

York bolted to a 15-0 lead, but IL outscored them 37-12 the rest of the way for the 10-point win.

"The key matches for us were at 125 and 130," Kersey said. "Jesse Perez won on a decision and Trevor Jones had a major decision. Those two wins for us came over quality wrestlers."

Perez's decision and Jones' major decision put IL up, 25-15, and the Warriors stayed in control for the win. Thomas Harris, Tyler Quilia and Josh Gray each had pins to boost IL.

The Warriors also had forfeit wins by Stefano Sojo and Will Pendleton.
