The Buford High School golf team finished fourth in the Class AA Lower State tournament at Sweetwater Country Club in Barnwell on Monday to earn a bid to the Class AA state tournament.The Jackets shot a 335 team total to finish behind Waccamaw, Bishop England and Central of Pageland.Waccamaw shot a 307, while Bishop England had a 313. Central, the Conference VIII-AA champion, finished with a 326. BHS, the VIII-AA runner-up, followed the Eagles.Buford was led by Trevor Banks’ 77 (36-41) and Taylor Banks’ 79 (39-40). Jalen Terry followed with an 82 (40-42) and Will Ford fashioned a 97 (47-50). Jimmy Taylor tallied a 98 (49-49).“I’m proud of our team,” BHS coach Jeff Moyer said. “This is the first time in 30 years we’ve qualified for the state golf tournament. Our guys have worked hard.”Moyer is assisted by Allan Banks.Mike Burch led the CHS with a 75 (37-38) and Ben Miller had an 80 (40-40).Barnwell’s Kyle Bearden shot a 71 (33-38) to earn medalist honors.Andrew Jackson had two golfers – Tanner Threatt and Cass Outlaw – compete, but didn’t qualify as individuals.In the Class AA Upstate tournament, Newberry won with a 317 and Ninety Six shot a 336, with Broome at 337.The Class AA state tournament is set for Monday-Tuesday at the Village Greens Golf Course in Grambling near Inman.Buford qualified for the Class AA Lower State field, finishing second to Central in the Conference VIII-AA tournament at the Lancaster Golf Club.CHS shot a 623 and Buford had a 660 (332-328).Trevor Banks was the medalist with a 143 (72-71) and his brother, Taylor Banks, was the runner-up with a 145 (77-68). Taylor Banks was six under going to the final two holes, but bogies on the holes had him finish with a 68.
