The Buford High School Yellow Jackets’ basketball teams return to action Tuesday when they hope to rebound in a home twin bill with Class AAAA foe Nation Ford.
The Jackets, in their only hoops action of the week, dropped a non-region twin bill at Lugoff-Elgin on Wednesday at the Kershaw County Class AAA school.
The L-E girls used a torrid second period to take a 50-29 win over the Lady Jackets.
In the nightcap, the Demons rolled to an 81-57 victory.
In the opener, L-E held a 9-4 lead after one period, but ignited on a 21-12 second quarter spurt to forge a 30-16 halftime lead on the Buford girls.
“We had way too many turnovers in the game and we’re still working to get it together,” Buford coach T.J. Armbrust said. “It might not show in our scores, but I feel our girls are making progress.
“If they keep playing hard and working hard, I feel we’re going to see some positives,” he said.
Lugoff-Elgin held a 38-20 lead after three periods before taking the 21-point win.
Aneka Dixon hit 15 to pace the Lady Demons’ win. Caressa Samuel and Krystal Bennett netted six points each.
Buford was led by Whitney Funderburk who scored seven points. Carley Bailey hit six. Daphne Honeycutt and Alicia Morris scored four points each.
Kendall Boone, Jena Hallman, Janay Blackmon and Hannah Knight each scored two points for Buford.
“A bright spot in the game was that we had a lot of players contribute to our overall team effort,” Armbrust said. “It was good to see a lot of different players score points.”
In the boys’ game, Lugoff-Elgin used a fast start to fuel its 24-point win over the Jackets.
L-E bolted to a 26-8 lead after one period and extended its edge to 46-19 at the break.
“We came out flat to start the game, but picked it up in the second half,” BHS coach Jeff Moyer said. “We played better in the second half, but at that point, it was too late.”
Qua Reid led the Jackets with 13 points and Logan McDowell hit 11 points. Derae Montgomery had seven points.
Andrew Jennings and Wayne Blakeney added six points each. Andrew Riner and Anthony Williams finished with four points each.
Logan Segee, Marcus Brown and Andrew Jennings each scored two points.
Lugoff-Elgin was led by Shaq Elms’ 34 points. Darius Custard scored 12 and Jonathan Williams added 11 for the Demons.
The Jackets’ home clash with Nation Ford tips off at 6 p.m. on Tuesday.
Following the twin bill with the Stallions, Buford will host county foe Andrew Jackson on Friday when the varsity doubleheader opens at 6 p.m.
