BUFORD – Buford had a rocky start on the hardwood to open its 2008-09 basketball season.
Class AAA Lugoff-Elgin swept a pair of games from the host Jackets on Tuesday night.
The Demons pulled away for a 77-64 win after the L-E girls took a 65-36 win.
In the varsity boys’ game, the Demons, up 32-28 at the break, steadily pulled away to post the 13-point win.
L-E was paced by JoJo Pellipino’s 24, 16 in the second half. Pellipino netted 12 points in the final period when the visitors outscored the Jackets 21-14 for the win.
“We struggled to execute in the first quarter, but I felt we came back and played well in the second period,” Buford coach Jeff Moyer said.
Buford, down 13-12 after one period, trailed 32-28 at the break.
“When Andrew Riner and Donald Kirkley were out there, good things happened for us, but Riner got in some foul trouble and his play was limited at times,” Moyer said. “I also felt Andrew Jennings played well for us and showed good improvement over our last game.”
Senior Qua Reid led the Jackets with 21 points, 11 in the second half. Riner scored 12 to join Reid in double digits.
Kirkley and Marcus Brown added seven points each. Anthony Williams finished with six and Logan Segee scored five.
Jennings and Wayne Blakeney each scored three points each for the Jackets.
“We’re still developing team chemistry, but it will come if we keep working and playing together,” Moyer said.
In the opener, the Buford girls dropped a 65-36 loss to the Lady Demons.
Lugoff-Elgin used a 21-5 second-period run to forge a 36-15 lead at the half. L-E led 15-10 after one period.
“The things we do well, we just didn’t do in that second period,” Buford High girls coach T.J. Armbrust said.
Buford kept battling and used an 18-12 third-period spurt to slice the Lady Demons’ lead to 48-33.
Lugoff-Elgin pulled away at the end when the foul-plagued Lady Jackets were missing some key players who fouled out of the game.
Aneka Dixon, who led L-E with 15 points, netted 11 in the first half. Regan Benns scored 12 and Caressa Samuel added 11 for the winners. Krystal Bennett chipped in eight points.
Buford was led by captain Janay Blackmon’s 18 points, which included 10 in the second half – eight in the third period when BHS rallied.
Carley Bailey and Kendall Boone each added five points. Daphne Honeycutt scored four for Buford. Hannah Hopkins and Kirsten Cauthen added two points each for the Lady Jackets.
“We played hard and had good effort throughout the game,” Armbrust said. “We continue to improve with each game. We just have to keep working and make progress with each practice and game.”
Buford is back in action Friday when the Jackets travel to Nation Ford of Fort Mill for a pair of games with the Class AAAA Falcons at 6 p.m.
BHS ventures to L-E for a rematch with the Demons on Wednesday at 6 p.m.
