The 2012 General Election can be compared to 1976 General Election. Gerald Ford, who was appointed president after President Richard Nixon’s White House corruption scandal, was up for re-election.
A GOP presidential candidate named Ronald Reagan was challenging Ford’s re-election. Reagan won his first GOP primary in North Carolina. The then-elite Republicans rejected Reagan by standing by Ford who ended up losing the general election to Jimmy Carter.
