Editor’s note: The following appeared on the front page of the Friday, June 9, 1944, edition of The Lancaster News.
The whole world was electrified Tuesday morning by the announcement that the invasion of Europe by the Allied forces had begun. Beachheads were established on the Normandy peninsula around Cherbourg and there have since that time been greatly expanded until today they had become more than beachheads.
A dispatch Thursday morning for Supreme Headquarters of the Allied Expeditionary Force said:
