You know me. You worked beside my parents at Springs, you taught me in school, you saw me grow up – you helped raise me.
You worship beside me, your children go to school with mine, and you love this community as much as I do.
It is because of you that I am running for Senate. I feel so blessed to have grown up here and that is why I chose to make this my home and raise my children here. You have given me so much and I want to give back – I want to serve you in the statehouse.
I know times are tough right now because I see it every day. In my work I sit with families, victims of economic downturn, as they make some of the hardest decisions of their lives in an attempt to save their homes and still have enough to buy groceries and prescription drugs.
Our friends and relatives, though hard-working and willing, are having trouble finding work.
The regular promise of steady work and decent pay that we have enjoyed for so long here no longer exists. Our young people are leaving us in an attempt to find opportunity elsewhere.
Our senior citizens have seen the savings they assumed would carry them through retirement vanish as Wall Street implodes. This isn’t politics to me – it’s personal.
Politicians seem to be out of touch with these issues. Rather than enriching the lives of the people they represent, they appear to care more about enriching themselves.
Rather than looking out for working families in tough economic times, they want to bailout the big corporations that caused the problems we face.
Rather than consensus and common sense solutions to problems, they care about partisanship and political games.
We need something different. We need a senator who will stand up to the assault on public schools, the same public schools that gave us such a wonderful education. We need someone who will work to create opportunity so that this community can once again offer the promise it did for my parents’ generation. We need someone who will make government live on a budget just like families – your family and mine. The time for courage and change is now and we cannot afford to fail.
All my life you have given me so much and I can never thank you enough. But I humbly ask you for a little more. Please give me your thoughts and prayers as I wind down this wonderful and enriching journey I have been on for 10 months.
Please give me your vote. If you do the honor of allowing me to represent you, I will look out for you, I will fight for you and I will never forget you – because I am one of you.
