Hilton Head, forced to a final game, rebounded with a 17-4 win over Irmo to capture the Dixie Majors state baseball championship at Lancaster High School’s Doomsday Corner on Wednesday, July 17.

Hilton Head’s 13-run win came after Irmo edged Hilton Head, 17-16 in a slugfest to force the second game of the day at the LHS field. Hilton Head was unbeaten in the tournament before the one-run loss to Irmo on Wednesday afternoon.

Hilton Head advances to the Dixie Majors World Series in North Charleston where it will play Mississippi on Saturday, July 27 at 1 p.m.

Hilton Head was also honored as it was presented the tournament’s sportsmanship award.

“Hilton Head was outstanding on the field and off the field,” said a tournament official. “They were very helpful and demonstrated what sportsmanship is all about. They deserved the award.”

The double-elimination tournament opened Saturday and included two Lancaster area entries, Lancaster and Buford, in the eight-team field.

Tournament host Lancaster opened its tournament play, dropping a 6-3 loss to Greer.

District Three champion Buford fell to eventual state champion Hilton Head, 16-0 to open its play.

In HH’s shutout win over Buford, Dylan Powell led the winners with three hits, including a home run.

Powell also was the winner in four frames of work, yielding a lone hit to Doopy Cloud.

The two Lancaster area teams then met in an elimination game and Buford stayed alive with the 10-2 win over Lancaster.

Kolby Croxton was the winning pitcher in a complete game. Brien Clyburn, the Lancaster starter, took the loss. Colt Ellis worked in relief for Lancaster.

Kaleb Liverner drilled a bases-loaded triple to aid the Buford offense.

Buford advanced to face Chapin and posted a 10-5 victory.

Kolby Croxton homered and Trent Allen was the winner. Allen went five innings and Nick Bowers hurled two frames in the five-run win.

Buford then faced Irmo in the semifinals and dropped a 3-2 loss.

Kaleb Liverner pitched seven innings and took the loss.

T.J. Cauthen delivered a two-run triple in the sixth inning to boost the Buford attack.

Buford went 2-2 in the tournament.

In the Dixie Pre-Majors state tournament, Central of Pageland, which won the Dixie Pre-Majors district baseball tournament for ages 15-17 in Lancaster last month, continued its postseason baseball success with an 8-7 win over Liberty to capture the state championship on Tuesday night.

Pageland defeated North Charleston in an elimination game to advance to face Liberty, which fell to Pageland in the state title game.
