INDIAN LAND – When the dust settles at Carolina Commons, Indian Land residents should see a CVS/pharmacy, a medical office building, a Harris Teeter grocery store and more.
The 25-acre commercial development is on U.S. 521 just outside Sun City Carolina Lakes and across the street from the Cornerstone development. It will offer 190,000 square feet of retail and office space.
"We're under way with what is definite," said contractor RED Partners spokesman Hall Johnston. The CVS, medical building and Harris Teeter are all under construction now.
A Wendy's restaurant and BB&T bank are both under contract. Johnston says RED Partners is also negotiating with a second bank.
RED Partners had been talking with Starbucks about a plat near the highway at the development's northern end. But Johnston says it probably won't happen now. On July 11, Starbucks said it plans to close 600 stores in the United States starting this month.
Ten North Carolina Starbucks, including five in Charlotte, are slated to be closed. Only one South Carolina store, in Spartanburg, is on the closings list.
Johnston says the development will still use the plat for something, if Starbucks does not take it.
The medical office building is 60,000 square feet. Presbyterian Hospital has leased 40,000 square feet, but the remaining 20,000 square feet are still available. The building is scheduled to open in the first quarter of 2009.
CVS/pharmacy is scheduled to open in September, and Johnston expects Harris Teeter to open in the second quarter of 2009.
"For the residents of Sun City, we want to try to get it cleaned up and get the dust settled as soon as possible," he said. "We're trying to be good neighbors."
