Early morning Jan. 27, the Indian Land community and Indian Land High School lost Derek Hammaker, an outstanding young man. I feel blessed to have taught Derek in auto technology classes for the past four years. He lived each day as an example of how life should be lived. Derek was a caring and well-respected member of our student body and our community.

A mature student, Derek, already had his career mapped out and was eager to begin his journey. As an educator, who has been in this business for a good many years, it's rare to see someone this young who was so certain of his future.

I would like to extend my heartfelt sympathy to the Hammaker family and to the students and faculty at Indian Land High School and to all of his extended family and friends. I would also like to credit our principal, Kathy Faris, and all the members of the Indian Land faculty and staff, as well as the district personnel, for the caring way that the events of the week were handled. It is a situation that cannot be planned in advance and in the toughest of times was handled so that the needs of many were met. Thank you to everyone who helped to ease the pain of our loss.
