Landmark Media Enterprises LLC, publisher of The Lancaster News, Carolina Gateway, The (Chester) News & Reporter and The Pageland Progressive Journal, announced Monday company-wide furloughs.

Employees will be required to take a five-day unpaid furlough as a way to curb expenses in a national recession that has hit newspapers and their advertisers particularly hard.

The furloughs are Feb. 16, March 16, April 13, May 18 and June 15. The businesses will be closed on these days, though the newspapers will continue to be published and delivered as scheduled, minimizing customer inconvenience.

Landmark Media owns 56 community newspapers as well as The Greensboro New& Record, The Virginia Pilot and The Roanoke Times. In January 2008, Landmark put all its papers up for sale, but withdrew them from the market in September until market conditions improve.

“We are committed to our customers and our employees,” said Susan Rowell, publisher of The Lancaster News and regional manager for the South Carolina papers. “We recognize we are facing challenging times, but we are making adjustments so we can continue to be the dominant information provider of news and advertising in the communities we serve.”
