Great weather conditions and close competition made for a special day for the Matt Blackwell Foundation last Saturday afternoon.
The field included 23 four-player teams who participated in the 11th annual captain’s choice golf tournament held at the Lancaster Golf Club.
The team of Junior Pate, Dale Pate, William Pate and Jesse Boone claimed the tournament title, carding a low-net score of 47.7 and edging out the team of Mark Blackwell, Mark Baker, Tony Yarborough and Brad Herring, who shot a 48.
Rounding out the top three finishers with a score of 49.4 was the foursome of Bill Farrar, Evan Faile, Russ Faile and Scott Roberts.
“The Matt Blackwell Foundation continues to give back to the community and I enjoy being a part of that in Matt’s memory and honor,” said Farrar, a Lancaster High School assistant principal and a Blackwell Foundation board member. “We are able to touch a lot of lives through the foundation. We had a great time for a great cause.”
Closest to the pin awards went to Jay Rainey (No. 4), Lane Small (No. 7), Gene Funderburk (No. 13) and Dennis Glover (No. 15).
The 2012 men’s longest drive winners were Scott Ware (No. 14) and Chris Carter (No. 6).
Anne Small took home the prize for the women’s longest drive and Danny Reynolds claimed the senior’s longest drive.
The $500 putting contest winner was Scott Roberts.
Normally played in June, the tournament was held earlier this year due to the planned closing of the golf course for renovations at the beginning of May.
“Club pro Phil Small and his staff do such a wonderful job of helping us put our tournament together each year and we never thought of playing it anywhere else,” said Larry Blackwell, Matt’s father and Foundation director. “We moved up our date this year and it turned out great.
“We could not have had a better day to celebrate Matt and the 11 years we’ve been blessed to have this tournament,” said Blackwell. “Finally, a big thank you to the Matt Blackwell Foundation’s Board of Directors, our sponsors, and the many volunteers who came together to help make this year’s tournament another tremendous success.”
