Fort Mill rallies, tops Post 31

Fort Mill foiled Lancaster Post 31’s opener in League V Legion baseball play with a 13-11 win over P-31 on Monday night.Lancaster, 2-3, 0-1, held a 9-1 lead after six innings and needed two runs to close out Post 43, but the Fort Mill team fought back.Post 43, seeking to rebound from a 6-14 mark of last season, scored six in the seventh inning to make it 9-7. The visitors tallied twice in the eighth to stalemate the game and ignited for four runs in the ninth to take a 13-9 edge.Lancaster rallied in the ninth as Nick Ferguson drew a bases-loaded walk and another run scored on a fielder’s choice, but Fort Mill, behind reliever Shawn Thomas, was able to hold on for the two-run comeback win.Thomas worked an inning and notched two strikeouts to earn the save.Lancaster Post 31 veteran hurler Nick Ferguson worked six innings and allowed five runs, four hits and two walks. He struck out seven.Jordan Workman hurled 2.1 innings and yielded four hits, two walks and hit a batter. J.R. Tripp and Evan Byrd each worked the mound in the Lancaster defeat.Post 31 started strong, scoring six in the second inning to erase a 1-0 Fort Mill lead. Tyler Vaughn and Rico Robinson each had run-scoring hits and Darius Cherry chipped in a two-run single to key the Lancaster uprising.In the Lancaster fifth, Post 31 extended its lead to 9-1 as Robinson, who had three hits and drove in two runs, singled home a run and Ferguson, who had a hit and drove in three runs, had a two-run single.Lancaster appeared in good shape to take its League V opener, but Fort Mill rallied late to take the win.Vaughn and Khoury Hammond each had three hits. Josh Warfield had two hits and drove in a run.Trevor Hammond also had a hit for Post 31.Lancaster hosted Camden Post 17 on Tuesday, but the game was completed after The News’ deadline for Wednesday’s edition.Post 31 hosts Clover on Thursday at 7 p.m.Juniors win at ChesterThe Lancaster junior team opened its League V schedule with an 11-2 win over Chester.Eric Mojica worked five innings to take the win, allowing two hits, a run and three walks. Mojica aided his cause with a hit.Will Gaston pitched two innings and yielded a run and posted two strikeouts. Gaston also aided the Lancaster cause with a hit.Adam Eubanks led the juniors’ offense with two hits and a triple. Kendall Adams had a hit and drove in two runs.Dillon Hydrick had a hit and a sacrifice fly. Andrew Smyre supplied a hit in the win.The junior team, 1-2, continues League V American Legion baseball play Thursday when it travels to Rock Hill for a 7 p.m. game with Post 34.The juniors have a 7 p.m. game with Charlotte on Saturday.
