I hope that you saw the fire trucks on display at the west end of the campus of the University of South Carolina at Lancaster. They were there for the annual conference of the South Carolina fire chiefs. The fire trucks were magnificent in their splendor, all shined and polished, fit for a presidential inaugural parade.
In a time when one faction or another is accusing us of a lack of pride and patriotism in our country, the firefighters gave me reason to feel good. From the lofty ladder of one truck, a very large American flag was waving proudly. As I marveled at the sight, I was reminded of the dedication and pride the firefighters take in their service to our town. I am grateful to them.
I thank Fire Chief Chris Nunnery and all who made the event in Lancaster possible. I hope the conference will come again. I’m sorry if you missed it.
