Filing for the vacant Lancaster County Council District 2 seat closed at noon Monday, with two candidates filing.

Charlene McGriff, chairwoman of the Lancaster County school board, and local business owner Blondale Funderburk are seeking the seat.

McGriff, who has served on the school board for more than 15 years, is the executive director of Palmetto Citizens Against Sexual Assault.

Lancaster native Funderburk was a director of Communities in Schools in the early 1990s and has worked with the Michael Blackmon Foundation since 1997.

Both candidates are running as Democrats.

The seat became vacant when Fred Thomas stepped down from council to become a magistrate judge at the end of June.

There is a little more than a year remaining in Thomas’ unexpired term.

The special primary will be Sept. 15 and the special election will be held on Nov. 3. The new council member will be sworn in at the first council meeting following the special election.
