For many in Lancaster County, supporting the annual Ward Faulkenberry Memorial Christmas Basket fund has become a custom each holiday season.
“What’s so special is those who, year after year, step up to help and honor and remember their loved ones for a great cause,” said Elaine Adkins, executive director of HOPE (Helping Other People Effectively), which oversees the effort.
Adkins cited a recent donation to the fund that provides food for hurting families each Christmas season as an example. The drive is in its 53rd year.
“We have one lady who’s been doing this for 25 Christmases now,” Adkins said. “Her husband passed away several years ago and they had always supported the Christmas basket as a family. After his death, she decided it was something she wanted to keep doing.
“People in this community do things like that just because they care.”
Right now, the basket fund is a little behind, with a total of $6,030.
A faith-based, non-profit volunteer-driven organization, HOPE in Lancaster provides short-term emergency assistance to those in crisis. It assist with utilities, mortgages, rent and food.
The need is great, Adkins said. So far, HOPE has distributed food to more than 2,000 families in 2012.
Although time is short, Adkins remains confident the community will come through.
“Lancaster County has always been blessed with caring folks who want to reach out and help,” she said. “It’s what is in their hearts. Nobody makes them do it.
“They do it because it’s Christmas.”
