KERSHAW – The Andrew Jackson High School volleyball program not only had the best team in the region, but also the best player.

Lady Volunteers’ junior outside hitter Haley Faulkenberry, who led the AJ girls in kills with 199, is the Region IV-AA Volleyball Player of the Year for the 2012 season.

Faulkenberry helped the Lady Vols to a 10-0 region record and 19-9 overall finish. Andrew Jackson won the region title for the second time in three seasons.

AJ advanced to the Class AA Upper State championship match before falling to Chesnee, which finished its season as the state runner-up to Bishop England.

The Lady Vols were ranked No. 3 in the final Class AA state poll of the 2012 season.

“This is an honor,” said Faulkenberry, a second-year member of the AJ squad who was also selected to the Class AA all-state volleyball team. “I’m always trying to improve and work hard.

“You play the way you practice,” she said.

Four Lady Vols earned all-region honors for their play during the 2012 season.

The AJ ace quartet included senior captain Tori Roberts, the AJ setter, along with junior libero Lauren Rowell, junior middle hitter Darby Threatt and sophomore outside hitter Hannah Cobb.

“As I have said all season long, our success was a by product of hard work and a complete team effort where each player fulfilled a unique and important role,” AJ coach John Verdugo said. “I am very proud of this team’s performance and extremely happy with the outstanding school and fan support.”
