Lancaster County has been awarded federal funds through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) of 2009  for the Emergency Food and Shelter National Board Program.

The county will receive $36,817 to supplement emergency food and shelter programs. This is in addition to  $81,327 previously awarded to the county.

The selection was made by a national board chaired by the Department of Homeland Security’s Federal Emergency Management Agency and consists of representatives from the Salvation Army, American Red Cross, United Jewish Communities, Catholic Charities USA, National Council of Churches of Christ in the USA  and United Way of America.

A local board made up of representatives from local health and human service organizations, local government, faith community and others will determine how the funds awarded to Lancaster County are to be distributed among the emergency food and shelter programs run by local service agencies in the area. It is responsible for recommending agencies to receive these funds made available through the ARRA.

Local agencies chosen to receive funds must:

u Be private voluntary nonprofits or units of government

u Be eligible to receive federal funds

u Have an accounting system

u Practice nondiscrimination

u Have demonstrated the capability to deliver emergency food and/or shelter programs

u And if they are a private voluntary organization, they must have a voluntary board

Qualifying agencies are encouraged to apply.

Lancaster County has distributed Emergency Food and Shelter funds previously with HOPE in Lancaster, KARE in Kershaw, Christian Services, Lancaster County Council on Aging and Greater New Hope Christian Association.

These agencies were responsible for assisting qualifying families and individuals with rent or mortgage assistance, utility assistance and meals.

Public or private voluntary agencies interested in applying for program funds should contact Carolyn Petroski, United Way of Lancaster County, at 283-8923 cpetroski@uwaylcsc.org for an application.
