A Lancaster man was charged with driving under the influence after he was involved in a car accident Feb. 19.
Charles J. Whitt, 45, 2555 Country Club Drive, received the DUI charge shortly after his car flipped along a stretch of West Meeting Street early that morning, said S.C. Highway Patrol Trooper Billy Elder.
The accident happened at 1 a.m. as Whitt was driving a 2011 Chevrolet two-door vehicle north on West Meeting Street. Elder said the car then drove off the right side of the road, struck an embankment and flipped over.
The accident happened near the intersection of West Meeting Street and Manor Drive, near Northwest Apartments.
Whitt and his passenger, a 54-year-old Lancaster man, were trapped inside and later pulled from the car by the Lancaster County Rescue Squad. The Lancaster County Sheriff’s Office, Lancaster Police Department, Highway Patrol and Riverside Volunteer Fire Department personnel also responded.
Both men were injured in the crash and taken by Emergency Medical Services to an area hospital, though Elder did not know where they were treated.
Elder said the men were both wearing seatbelts at the time of the crash.
