Dixie AA stars seek district title

AAA stars battling in Union sub-district

The Lancaster Dixie Baseball AA all-stars stayed unbeaten in the district tournament on Wednesday night with an 11-5 win over Lewisville.

The game actually began Tuesday night, but was postponed to Wednesday due to lightning at the field.

The Lancaster AA stars, needing three outs, completed the task in quick fashion to advance to the title round on Thursday afternoon. The game was completed after The News’ deadline for the Friday paper. See the Sunday paper for a complete roundup.

Lancaster, as the tournament’s lone unbeaten team, needed one win to advance to the state tournament in Dillon on July 15.

“Our defense was outstanding in the win over Lewisville on Wednesday,” Lancaster AA all-stars coach Brad Small said. “We played tough defense and put ourselves in position to wrap up the championship with one more win.”

The Lancaster Dixie Baseball AA stars opened play with a 23-7 win over Chester on Monday night when the double-elimination tournament opened at Gandy Field in the LDB’s Wylie Park Complex.

Lewisville opened play with a shutout win over Great Falls. Chester, after falling to the Lancaster AA stars on Monday, eliminated Great Falls to stay alive.

Chester then downed Lewisville on Wednesday night to earn the chance to play the Lancaster Dixie AA stars on Thursday when Chester needed two wins to stay alive.

Dixie AAA all-stars rebound in tourney

The Lancaster Dixie Baseball AAA all-stars are battling for the district championship this week in Union.

The Lancaster Dixie AAA stars won an elimination game with a 6-5 win over Rock Hill American on Wednesday.

Drake Bond, who worked 2.2 innings in relief, was the winner. In facing 12 batters, Bond allowed three walks and a hit.

He struck out five batters.

AAA stars’ starter Tad McCowan, in facing 19 batters, yielded five hits and three walks. He fanned one Rock Hill AL batter.

Rock Hill forged an early lead, but the Lancaster AAA stars rallied for the exciting win.

Austin Catoe drilled a triple and a single to pace the Lancaster stars. Brett Percival had a double and drove in two runs. Bond singled and had two runs batted in.

McCowan and Ethan Funderburk each had a hit for the winners.

On Tuesday night, the Lancaster Dixie AAA all-stars rebounded from an first-round loss to roll to a 16-1 win in three innings over Union National.

Austin Catoe pitched two innings and struck out three. He allowed two hits.

William Wrape, in an inning of mound work, fanned one and yielded no hits.

Wrape triggered the Lancaster AAA stars’ attack with a triple and three runs batted in on the night.

Bond belted a triple and drove in a run.

Austin Catoe supplied two hits and two RBIs. Cory Wallace added a hit for the local stars. The Lancaster AAA stars dropped a 16-8 loss to Chester in the sub-district tournament in Union on Monday night.

Chester ignited for 12 hits against three Lancaster pitchers in its eight-run victory.

Drake Bond led the Lancaster AAA stars with two hits and drove in a run.

Brett Percival belted a triple and drove home two runs.

  Corey Wallace, William Wrape and Tad McCowan each had a hit in the game for the Lancaster AAA all-stars.
