While details remain sketchy, the Lancaster Sheriffs Office is investigating a shooting that possibly happened in the vicinity of the Great Falls Highway/Airport Crossroads intersection about lunchtime Monday, Dec. 23.
“We got a call from Springs Memorial Hospital about 12:40 (p.m.) that someone had been brought in with gunshot wound,” said Lancaster County Sheriff Barry Faile.
Faile identified the victim as 45-year-old Janson Richardson. Faile said Richardson had been shot once in the shoulder. His condition is unknown at this time.
“I can tell you he has a clean gunshot wound with an entrance and exit wound, along with facial injuries,” Faile said.
Faile said Richardson was in the parking lot of Piggly Wiggly, 1831 Great Falls Highway, and flagged down an acquaintance who took him to the hospital emergency room.
Deputies were searching the area around the store, which closed in mid-August, late Monday afternoon, but didn’t find any evidence of a shooting.
A Lancaster County Sheriff’s Office incident report said deputies also checked with employees at Family Dollar, which is beside the Piggly Wiggly building, as well as employees of Dollar General, which is also nearby. None of the employees, the report said, heard any gunshots.
According to the incident report, investigators were not able to question Richardson because he was intubated with a breathing tube.
An SMH spokeswoman said Thursday, Dec. 26, that Richardson was not there.
“Right now, we don’t know if this happened there or elsewhere,” Faile said. “Our folks are still trying to piece it together. From what we understand, the acquaintance said Richardson told him he had been beaten up and shot. At this point, we don’t have a definitive timeline.”
Faile said the suspect who assaulted and shot Richardson is described as a short black male driving a white Honda Accord.
Faile said anyone with information about the incident should call the sheriff’s office’s non-emergency line at (803) 283-4136.
