Final decision expected to be made by April 15

The University of South Carolina has announced three finalists in its search for a permanent dean to lead USC Lancaster.

The announcement is a significant development in a search that began late last year to replace former USCL Dean Dr. John Catalano.

Catalano stepped down Jan. 1 after 11 years at the helm of the university.

Among the names on the short list are two current USCL officials: Dr. Maxie Myron “Ron” Cox Jr. and  Dr. Walter P. Collins III.

Cox is associate dean for academic student affairs and an associate history professor at USCL.

Collins is assistant dean of student affairs and an associate French and English professor.

Rounding out the list is Christopher L. Nesmith, director of the university’s evening program and assistant professor of English in extended university at USC Columbia.

USC Palmetto College Vice Provost Chris Plyler said interviews with the men will continue through March 8 at the USC Columbia and Lancaster campuses.

He said the final decision is expected by April 15.

USCL is now under the guidance of Stan Emanuel, who is serving as interim dean.

“We feel fortunate that we have three very qualified candidates who also just happen to be part of the USC system,” Emanuel said. “I’m glad the process is moving along and we’ll certainly welcome the new dean when the appointment comes.”
