The Lancaster County Dixie Softball Darlings all-stars capped an impressive run to earn a bid to the state tournament next month in Hanahan.
The Darlings stars, ages 7-8, completed a 4-0 run with a 15-9 win over the Chester stars.
The Darlings’ six-run win sends them to the state tournament July 6 at Hanahan of North Charleston.
“We’re real proud of these girls and what they have accomplished,” said Darlings coach LaTasha Thompson. “It’s been a few seasons since a Darlings all-star softball team has gone this far in the playoffs. This is a big accomplishment for these girls.”
The Lancaster County Darlings captured the district softball crown with the 15-9 win over the Chester stars on Tuesday night in Jefferson.
Madeleine Baker belted a solo home run and Amariya Thompson drilled a two-run home run to spark the Darlings’ offensive effort. Caroline Wrenn also homered in the Darlings’ stars’ win.
Kelsey McManus also had a triple in the Darlings’ win.
Baker was the winning pitcher. McManus and Caroline Wrenn each pitched in the win.
Thompson said teamwork was the key in the Darlings stars’ triumph.
“These girls have worked well together,” Thompson said. “Teamwork was the key in our success.
“We only had a couple of weeks from the end of the season to the start of the all-star district tournament, but we went to work and came together as a team,” Thompson added.
The Darlings, in sweeping the tournament in four games without a loss, outscored their four district foes, 67-26.
The Lancaster County Darlings opened play with a 24-6 win over Pageland and followed with a 10-6 win over Dentsville. The Darlings earned a bid to the district championship game with an 18-5 victory over Pageland before wrapping up the district title with a 15-9 win over Chester on Tuesday night.
In the title game, the contest was tied at 4-all in the second inning, but the Lancaster County Darlings stars outscored Chester 11-5 to take the victory.
