Buford High’s run to the Class AA Upper State softball championship was halted on Friday, May 10.
Crescent High School of Iva, 23-5, blanked the Lady Jackets, 10-0 in six innings.
Buford, a well-traveled team in the Class AA Upper State championship series covering some 800 miles in four days, opened the week with a rainout at Pendleton on Monday, May 6.
On Tuesday, Buford ventured to Pendleton to face the Lady Bulldogs in an elimination game. The game was played to the fifth inning and tied at 4-all when it was washed out by a late afternoon downpour.
The rainout meant Buford had to return to Pendleton to complete the game.
The Lady Jackets rallied for a 12-6 win to stay alive.
BHS, which finished 24-6, then ventured to Region IV-AA foe Chesterfield High for an elimination game. Buford stayed alive with a 6-3 win over the Lady Rams.
The Lady Jackets’ win over the Lady Rams sent Buford High to Iva to face Crescent on Friday.
The Lady Tigers broke on top early and steadily pulled away for the 10-run win halted in the sixth inning due to the mercy rule.
Crescent’s Brittany Hoskins, who hurled a three-hitter, notched the win. Buford High senior pitcher Carley Bailey took the loss.
Hoskins aided her cause with two hits, including a double, and drove in three runs. Shaney Spires supplied two hits, including a home run, and drove in two runs.
Buford earned a bid to the Class AA Upper State title series, capturing the District IV title with an 11-3 win over Region IV-AA rival Andrew Jackson, which won the District III crown after capturing the region championship.
Crescent will host Class AA Lower State champion Waccamaw in a best-of-three state title series opener on Monday.
Waccamaw hosts game two on Wednesday, May 15, with game three, if needed, set to be played Friday, May 17 at a neutral site.
