The Indian Land High School boys gave it a game effort before dropping a tough 57-55 road loss to Class AAAA foe York on Tuesday night.

The Cougars bolted to a 20-8 first-period lead, but the Warriors kept battling and made it a game to the end.

"I was proud of our effort," Indian Land High second-year coach Nate Smith said. "We battled and didn't quit."

Indian Land, with a 15-10 second-period run, sliced the Cougars' lead to 30-23 at the break. The third period was tight, with York holding a 47-41 edge heading into the final eight minutes.

"We had them rattled, but they hit some big free throws and we made some costly turnovers," Smith said. "We don't like to lose, but a tough, intense game like this can only help us."
