Community to honor King

A number of events are slated to celebrate Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day today and Monday. They include:

– The Lancaster Branch of the NAACP will celebrate Martin Luther King Jr. Day at 4 p.m. today at Living Word Church, 117 Market St. The speaker will be the Rev. Wayne Murray.

– North Corner AME Zion Church will hold a Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. program at 4 p.m. today. There will be singing, praise dancing and the original speech of “I Have a Dream,” presented by Anthony Ford, outreach director and Alice M. Grier, Christian education director of North Corner AME Zion Church.

– Faith Hope and Victory Christian Church will host the annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Community Scholarship breakfast at 8 a.m. Monday at the Bradley Arts and Sciences Building at the University of South Carolina at Lancaster. Tickets are $20 for adults, $15 for children ages five and under or $250 for VIP tables which seat eight. Guest speaker will be New York Times best selling author Omar Tyree. – The United Citizens Club of Heath Springs will hold its annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. breakfast at 8 a.m. Monday at the United Citizens Community Center in Heath Springs. Guest speaker will be the Rev. Otis Lathan, pastor of Pleasant Grove Missionary Baptist Church. Admission is $8 and will be taken at the door. For details, call 283-6787.

– Mount Carmel AME Zion Church will hold its annual Martin Luther King Day service at noon Monday.
