Five county high school football standouts earned recognition at the weekly meeting of the Founders Federal Credit Union Tri-County Football Coaches Association on Tuesday.
Lancaster High School senior linebacker A.J. Williams along with Indian Land’s Rondreas Truesdale and AJ’s William Cunningham, Aaron Payne and Tyler Denkins reaped honors for their play in week five.
Williams received the Div. I Defensive Player of the Week with 15 tackles, five tackles for loss, a sack and a pressure passer in LHS’s loss to Ridge View.
County athletes at AJ dominated the Division II awards, winning four of five honors.
Truesdale, a senior standout for the Warriors, ran for 321 yards in 22 carries and scored three touchdowns. He also hauled in a pass for 28 yards and a score.
AJ’s Payne was named the Div. II Offensive Lineman of the Week, grading 90 percent with five knockdown blocks in its loss to Camden. William Cunningham reaped the Division II Defensive Lineman of the Week with 13 tackles and a sack for AJ. Senior place-kicker Tyler Denkins was named Div. II Special Teams Player of the Week. Denkins had three kickoffs inside the 20-yard line with a 40.4 punting average and 1-1 on extra points.
In other Division I awards, Northwestern dominated. Trojans’ winners were Dalton Adkins (offensive lineman of the week), Briston Gordon (defensive lineman) and Sully Foy (special teams player of the week). Fort Mill players saluted were Nick Raszeja (offensive player of the week) and Alex Nicholson (offensive lineman of the week).
In Division II, Westminster Catawba’s Stevie Magyar was named defensive player of the week.
Lancaster High Division I honorable mentions were Jordan Hamrick (offensive lineman of the week), Donte Spates (defensive lineman of the week).
Indian Land Division II honorable mentions were Marc Morris (offensive lineman of the week), Michael Rodriguez (defensive player of the week), Shawn Washington (defensive lineman of the week) and Devonte Benjamin (special teams player of the week).
