The Closing the Achievement Gap Committee will be sponsoring the 2009 Community Education Summit at 6 p.m. Feb. 27 at the Bundy Auditorium at the University of South Carolina at Lancaster.

The summit is open to parents, interested residents and youth groups. Admission is free.

Award-winning author Dr. Mychal Wynn will be the keynote speaker. Wynn will speak about teaching, parenting, mentoring and what can done to help close the achievement disparities between whites and minority students.

Wynn, author of more than 24 books, has more than 25 years of experience in the private sector, nonprofit sector and in public education. He is recognized a premier authority on black male achievement, school-improvement planning, closing the achievement gap and college planning.

His presentations are upbeat and practical. Interwoven within his humor is the reality that many children are falling through the cracks.

The Closing the Achievement Gap Committee is a community-wide initiative consisting of local leaders in the business, faith, nonprofit and educational communities who are committed to eliminating the inequities of academic achievement especially along gender and racial lines.
