Members of Pleasant Ridge Presbyterian Church, 912 Clinton Ave., will celebrate one of their own Thursday, Aug. 15, through Saturday, Aug. 17, with a music workshop.

The event will honor church elder Dolores C. Hudson.

Hudson, a longtime member of Pleasant Ridge, has been involved with the music program at the church for nearly 70 years.

“Elder Hudson is a longstanding member and an extremely dedicated woman,” said event organizer Alexis Small. “We’re holding this to honor her and her longterm service to our church.”

Small, the wife of Pleasant Ridge’s pastor, the Rev. Lorenzo Small Sr., serves on a planning committee consisting of four other Pleasant Ridge members. She  said the church hopes the workshop will also further develop Pleasant Ridge’s music ministry.

The music workshop will be led by Steven Daniels, minister of music at Shiloh Missionary Baptist  Church in St. Paul, Minn.

“My husband and I were members of Shiloh from 1998 to 2006, before we moved back to North Carolina,” Smith said. “Being familiar with Steven and his family, we knew he would do well.”

Daniels, an accomplished gospel recording artist, has his own record label, Xcentric Records, and has written songs recorded by the Mississippi Mass Choir and Chicago Mass Choir.

The workshop will begin at 6 p.m. Thursday and Friday and at 9 a.m. Saturday. The workshop will close at 5 p.m. Saturday with a concert featuring all participating choirs.

The three-day event will cover topics including how to set up and develop a music ministry; how to instill a spirit of excellence, discipline and commitment; how to establish policies and procedures; how to choose appropriate songs for worship and praise; and how to improve choir directing skills.

Small said Hudson was surprised, but appreciative when she discovered what the church was planning.

“I know she was shocked and pleasantly surprised, initially,” Small said. “Elder Hudson and the community all seem really excited about the event, and we’re looking forward to this ministry.”

Small said Pleasant Ridge Presbyterian Church has other upcoming events planned, including the continuation of its summer movie series at 7 p.m. Aug. 23.

The church will also celebrate its fall revival Sept. 25-27 with the Rev. Steve Daniels Jr., also of Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church.

There are still spaces available for the workshop, and any interested local church choirs and musicians are invited to participate.

There is no charge to register, but Small said donations would be appreciated.
