Chesterfield Courthouse shooting suspect arrested near Pageland after police chase

CHESTERFIELD – Two people were taken to a regional hospital and one man was arrested Wednesday afternoon after he allegedly shot them outside the Chesterfield County Courthouse parking lot.


The Chesterfield County Sheriff’s Department reported Curtis Gorney, 54, of Cheraw, allegedly shot 21-year-old Olivia Weaver and her stepfather, Donnie Nolan, from a pickup truck, then sped away. Weaver and Nolan were taken to a Florence County hospital with wounds described as non-lifethreatening.

Gorney then led law officers on a high-speed chase towards Pageland. 

He was apprehended just east of Pageland, less than a half-mile from office of The Pageland Progressive Journal office. 

Deputies reported Gorney fired at them from his truck during the chase, then threw a gun from his moving vehicle.

Chesterfield County Sheriff Sam Parker said Weaver and Nolan were at the courthouse for a family court appearance. 

He said Gorney and the woman are the parents of a 6-month-old girl, who was not with either of ner parents durign the incident. The courthouse remained open for business Wednesday afternoon.

Chesterfield County court documents said Gorney was free on $2,500 bond after being charged with criminal domestic violence and petty larceny on Sept. 4, 2012. 

The documents say the charges are related to his relationship with Weaver. No trial date has been set on those chrages. There was also a court order prohibiting Gorney from contacting Weaver or members of her family.
