Attention all bluegrass music fans – it’s time once again for the Carolina Legends Festival, to be held today and Saturday at Andrew Jackson State Park. This year marks the festival’s 20th anniversary, although this is the first time it has not been held on Mother’s Day weekend, said Christina Chastain, galleries and program director at the Lancaster County Council of the Arts. Otherwise, the festival will go on as in years past, with popular headlining bands returning to perform, along with some new acts.“We’ve made the music a little more diverse this year to try and draw in a different crowd of people,” Chastain said. “We usually average about 1,000 people attending this event and we expect that many, if not more, due to the new musical acts we’ve added.”The festival gets underway at 6 p.m. today and ends about 9 p.m. Music will be provided by Trinity and the Old Mule String Band. Local artists including Robert Stevens and Heather Mullins Teasley will have their wares on display for sale and food vendors will be on hand.Things will get rolling again at 10 a.m. Saturday with performances by Deeper Shade of Blue, Bentz Kirby, Easy Pickers and the Papa String Band, among others.Workshops will be held throughout the day as well, featuring the banjo, fiddle and guitar. Again, artists will have their creations up for sale and proceeds from art purchases will benefit the new artisan center that is being planned in downtown Lancaster. There will be a shift in the music about 5 p.m., with the sounds of traditional bluegrass giving way to blues, shag, light rock and New Age bluegrass. Acts include Congaree, LA Stars, Harry Deal and the Galaxies and Randy Lucas and the Cosmic Possums, which Chastain called “one of the best bands in the South.”Tickets for Friday night’s events are $5; Saturday admission is $15. Senior discounts are available and children under 12 get in free. Combo tickets for both days are $18. Tickets are available in advance at the Lancaster County Council of the Arts, 201 W. Gay St., Lancaster.Tickets will also be sold at the gate.Want to go?
