I was working on tugboats on the Intracoastal Waterway when we heard a call over the radio from the boat in front of us.
“Tug Royal engineer, my husband has fallen behind the wheel and is unconscious. I don’t know what to do.”
We pulled over to the boat and performed CPR on the man until the Coast Guard and Marine Corps helicopter arrived.
I felt very helpless and became overcome with emotion. From then on, I decided there must be more I can do to help people. I saw in The Lancaster News that Lancaster EMS was offering EMT basic classes and I enrolled. It was great to learn so much more of what could help people when you encounter those in need.
Since I work full time outside of EMS, I work as a member of the EMS auxiliary so I am able to help the full-time paramedics and EMTs. I enjoy being able to provide assistance to those in need.
