Lancaster launched its prep wrestling season in exciting fashion as the Bruins topped Class AAA’s 11th-ranked Chester, 40-38 on Wednesday, Nov. 28 in the LHS gym.

The Bruins, down 26-24 with five weight classes to go, used a pivotal 16-0 flurry to post the comeback win.

Vonis Garris, at 190, delivered a key fall to cap the LHS run.

“Vonis had to get a pin and he responded for us,” LHS coach Leon Boulware. “He sealed it with a pin.”

Jeff Reed opened the Bruins’ surge with a major decision and Quinshun Evans followed with a pin to give LHS a 34-26 edge.

Garris sealed the win with his pin, the fifth for the Bruins.

“Knocking off the 11th ranked team in Class AAA is big for us,” Boulware said. “I feel the key to that is the hard work we’ve put in during the preseason.”

LHS pin winners included Jonathan Reid, Brandon Mosier, Desmond Hood, Evans and  Garris.

The match included a salute to the family of former LHS and Indian Land coach Mike Kersey.

The team presented roses to Faye Kersey, Mike Kersey’s mother, and Erin

Kersey, Kersey’s wife, who was unable to attend dur to an illness in the

family.

Kersey’s father, Wayne, addressed the Bruins’ team prior to the match.

“He gave us some inspiring words,” Boulware said. “Our wrestlers don’t

know coach Kersey, but if they did they would have a great deal of respect

for him. He meant a lot to wrestling.”

Lancaster faces Indian Land at the IL gym tonight at 6.
