The Lancaster Bruins posted a split in a pair of home Region III-AAAA matches Saturday, Jan. 19 in the LHS gym.

The Bruins, 13-6, downed Nation Ford of Fort Mill, 40-31 and fell to Fort Mill High School, 53-11.

“I thought we had a good effort in the two matches,” LHS coach Leon Boulware said. “We competed well in the match with Fort Mill. We only gave up three pins against a team which is ranked No. 12 in the Class AAAA poll.

“We were competitive and contested the matches,” he said. “We made them earn their points and I felt our young wrestlers stepped up and did well.”

Lancaster High junior 182-pounder Quinshun “Bubba” Evans, 28-3 on the season, led the Bruins with a pair of major decisions.

Lancaster is back in action Wednesday night when the Bruins host region foe York on LHS senior wrestling night.

The LHS senior night festivities begin at 6:30, with the match at 7.

The Bruins have seven seniors on the 2012-13 LHS wrestling squad.

“It will be a tough match,” Boulware said. “York is ranked No. 14 in the state and they have posted some quality wins this season.”

Lancaster will compete in the region tournament at Rock Hill High School on Saturday.

LHS falls at SPHS

The Lancaster Bruins fell to South Pointe in a close match which was decided by the third wrestling criteria.

The Bruins and Stallions battled to a 38-all tie at the end of regulation.

The first criteria to decide the match was an unsportsmanlike penalty on either team during the match, but there was none on either team.

Then the next criteria was the number of pins, but each team had the same number – five each.

Then it came down to technical falls and SPHS had one in the match.

The LHS pin winners were Quinshun Evans, John Bush, Donte Spates, Tyri Brown-Washington and Desmond Hood. The Bruins also had two major decisions – one each from Matt Brazzell and Raheem Chambers.

“I thought we wrestled well with a good overall effort, but we have to finish these big matches,” Boulware said. “That’s a key point for us now.”
